What is jute made of?
Jute fabrics are made from natural fibres of the jute plant from the Corchorus genus. After harvesting, the stems of the plant are retted for about three weeks – meaning they are soaked in water so the fibres can be separated more easily. Afterwards, the fibres are removed by hand, washed and dried. Before spinning, the fibres are oiled.
The colour variations in jute fabrics result from natural fluctuations in growing and processing conditions such as humidity, maturity of the plants and retting methods.
