How do fabrics protect against the sun?
The UV protection factor of a fabric depends largely on the density of the weave. The denser the fabric, the less harmful UV radiation can pass through.
Color also plays a role: dark colors generally absorb more radiation than light ones. However, dark fabrics tend to heat up faster and may lose their shape sooner.
How do I know how well a fabric protects against the sun?
Look for labels indicating the UPF rating, which is determined in a lab and shows how much radiation is blocked. The best value is UPF 50+, meaning the fabric lets through only 1/50 of radiation, blocking at least 98%.
