Production of Cordura® fabrics

Cordura® fabrics are made from polyamide yarns, which are made much more robust and abrasion-resistant than normal polyamide threads through a special treatment. In individual cases, Cordura® fabrics can be made from polyester yarns.

Important properties

The main features of Cordura® are its particular durability, abrasion resistance, wear resistance and tear resistance. At the same time, the robust material is still pleasant to the touch thanks to the slightly roughened yarn, making it ideal for clothing.

Cordura® fabrics are generally water-repellent.

Depending on the yarn count, a distinction is made between 1500 den (1680 dtex), 1000 den (1100 dtex), 500 den (560 dtex) and 330 den (360 dtex). The higher the number, the stronger the yarn and the more robust the fabric.

The abrasion-resistant Cordura® fabrics can be improved with coatings or finishes. Depending on the process, the fabrics can also have the following properties:

  • Waterproof and windproof
  • Cut and puncture resistant
  • IRR finish (Infra Red Reflectance)
  • Flame retardant
  • Ceraspace™ coating

Care instructions

Due to the water and dirt-repellent impregnation on most products, it is usually sufficient to clean the fabric with a damp cloth. If necessary, the fabric can be washed at 40° C according to the manufacturer; we recommend using a low spin setting.

The fabric should only be ironed at low heat (iron 1 point) and only on the textile side if the fabric has a coating. Ironing reactivates the impregnation of the fabric.

In individual cases, however, it is always important to observe the care labelling of the respective clothing or fabrics, as finishing, different processing methods or mixed yarns can result in different care requirements.
